What is Christian Science?

Science

"Science" is defined in Latin as "to know; knowledge." Christian Science is the knowledge, or understanding, of how Christ Jesus demonstrated his healing works.

Mary Baker Eddy

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science, discovered Christian Science in 1866 after sustaining an injury that the medical doctors in attendance declared hopeless. Turning to her Bible, as she had been raised to do, Mrs. Eddy (then Mrs. Patterson) found profound spiritual insight and comfort in Christ Jesus' healings. She soon realized that she was completely healed through her study of the Bible and began further discovering divine Science, the demonstrable law of God as practiced by Jesus, as able to heal sin, sickness, and death. Through her understanding of the Bible and man's spiritual relationship to God as made in His "image" and "likeness" (Genesis 1:26),  Mrs. Eddy healed countless patients and in 1867 she began to teach others how to heal through the Science of Christian healing. "I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration." (S&H 109:16-22)

Published Works

Mary Baker Eddy first published the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, in 1875 and ordained the Bible and the Christian Science textbook in 1895 as Pastor of the Church of Christ, Scientist. Mrs. Eddy opened the Massachusetts Metaphysical College in 1880, first published The Christian Science Journal in 1883, founded The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts in 1892, first published the Christian Science Sentinel in 1898, and in 1908 she started the world-renowned newspaper The Christian Science Monitor.
